MEET NICOLE BAKER

Nicole Baker

I was born on a military base in Saskatchewan and lived my first 5 years as a combination military kid and farm kid. I have lived in Southern Alberta since just before I started Kindergarten and grew up on a military base outside Medicine Hat.  It was in my kindergarten year in that tiny school when I decided I would become a teacher!

Growing up in a small school, we had close relationships with our community of teachers and unique opportunities that just didn't happen "in the city."  I feel so fortunate to have grown up there and to have had the amazing childhood that I did.

I moved to Lethbridge in the 1990s to attend the University.  I first received an undergraduate degree in Psychology focusing on child development and neuroscience, followed by an after-degree in Education with a special interest in literacy and inclusion.  I have taught since 2001 in kindergarten through grade 5 and have spent the majority of those years in grade one and as a learning support teacher.  I have taught hundreds of children to read and it's one of my greatest joys to hear from former students who remember the fun we had together, the way they felt in our classroom, and the joy they felt learning to read and write!   I have been blessed to work with some of the most talented and passionate educators and mentors in my career.  I know first-hand that teachers give everything they have and more to do what is best for students. Sadly, our education system is drastically underfunded and unsupported and we are not always able to meet the specific learning needs of every student in a classroom due to class sizes and composition. It brings me great joy to provide personalized instruction for struggling young learners and their families!

I have training and experience too numerous to list (I might be addicted to professional learning!) but my training in the Orton-Gillingham methodology and learning disabilities with deficits in reading and writing (formerly known as dyslexia and dysgraphia) are both worth mentioning here.

Unfortunately, limited spaces are available in my tutoring schedule and I always have a waitlist.  As a proud practising educator, I am ethically unable to tutor students whom I teach directly.

I have expanded my online tutoring work, so no matter where you live in the world I may be able to provide your learner with professional reading and writing instruction - reach out for a consult!

I am usually able to fit in parent mentoring and student assessment sessions fairly quickly, but package purchases depend on a space opening up as students "graduate" or take a break from tutoring.
